Title: Lord Kethron Dramaign, Keeper of the Temple of Knowledge, Blessed of Silas, Thaumaturge
Echelon: 6
Effective Echelon: 2
Schools: Eviscism, Cogimancy, Formistry, Animancy
Domain: Knowledge
Techniques: Thaumaturgy, Pedagogue
Opus: Abrogation, Minor Ward
Thaumaturgy:
The magic of magic. Thaumaturgy is a technique representing knowledge of and skill with all the arcane schools, and thus, requires being sparked in all four. Its practitioners are called Thaumaturges.
Adept Thaumaturges... can deduce the nature of a spell from simple observation. By seeing a spell being cast, or studying the runes of a magical object, they should be able to deduce its exact nature (what school it is, what it does, etc). If by some contrivance they cannot learn the magic's exact nature, the Thaumaturge should at least be given a clue. This is not a magical ability, this is sheer encyclopedic knowledge of the arcane. This may or may not work on ongoing magical effects, depending on what makes sense in context.
Expert Thaumaturges... can unravel, or weaken, an ongoing magical effect. After spending a minute per echelon of the targeted magical effect studying it, twice as long if the effect is from a technique, and twice as long again if it's from an opus, the Thaumaturge will deduce a way to destroy it. If the magic has a lower echelon than the Thaumaturge's, it is simply unmade. If it has a higher echelon, was made with a technique or opus, etc, then follow the usual procedure for determining whose effective echelon is higher.
Master Thaumaturges... can increase the echelon of a mage in their vicinity. By dedicating themselves to doing nothing but supporting their ally, they may increase the effective echelon of that ally by one. This applies both in and out of combat, i.e. this would enable a mage of 5th echelon to create a 6th echelon artifact. This cannot be used on the Thaumaturge themselves.
Pedagogue: [Knowledge Domain]
Teacher of all, this blessed scholar excels at mentoring and guiding others in their growth and magic.
Adept pedagogues aware of their students needs. Should a question be left unanswered, whether by book or person, they know where best to find it for them.
Expert pedagogues when mentoring someone, can reduce the GW cost of anything they do that is arcane related by 2 per level. [increasing echelon from 0 to 5 would have cost reduced by 10]
Master Pedagogues can increase the effective echelon of another mage (up to their own echelon or by 1, whichever is higher) or ongoing magical effect if they focus their actions to supplement the magic with their own.
Abrogation
Pinnacle 9 | 0 Qualifiers
You must be a Thaumaturge to cast this opus. When this opus is cast, you target one magical effect as it is being cast. If your echelon is higher than the magic you are targeting, then you completely thwart the magic being cast. If your echelon is lower, then you reduce the echelon of the spell by your own echelon. I.e., if you cast this opus at 3rd echelon to target another opus at 6th echelon, you reduce that opus's power to 3rd echelon.
Ward Minor
Pinnacle 9 | 1 Qualifier
You must be a Thaumaturge to cast this opus. Choose one school of arcane magic, OR all domain magic. Any magical effect of that school that is targeting the Thaumaturge and of an echelon equal to or lower than the Thaumaturge's is directly and efficiently countered by exactly the same energy, in exactly the appropriate manner to avoid any harm. I.e., even a magically propelled rock is suspended in the air momentarily before falling harmlessly to the ground. If the magic targeting the Thaumaturge is of a higher echelon, then it is reduced by the Thaumaturge's echelon.
The Qualifier:
This spell takes about ten minutes of uninterrupted focus to cast, and because it requires the Thaumaturge to anticipate the correct school they're going to have to defend against, makes it basically impossible to effectively use this spell without doing one's due diligence head of time.
